Cobblestone Road Women's Socks by Michelle Mattingly

Update: This pattern was the focus of the first Knit-Along (KAL) sponsored by AllFreeKnitting's Stitch and Unwind blog.  For more details, and helpful videos, visit these posts:
Week 1 - Knitting the Cuff/Leg
Week 2 - Knitting the Heel/Foot
Week 3 - Knitting the Toes/Shaping the Heel
Week 4 - Finishing the Socks

The Cobblestone Road Women's Socks in Tweedy Pima by Michelle Cali Mattingly are inspired by her childhood in Chicago, where cobblestones from "Old Chicago" occasionally peaked through the asphalt.

Like Michelle's Brick By Brick Men's Socks pattern, these socks are worked flat and then seamed.  (Perfect for those of us who hate or fear DPNs!)

  4. Could I do them in the round???

  5. The pattern is written for knitting flat, lej619. So, if you wanted to knit them in the round, you would need to change the pattern so that the right side was always facing you.

  11. Hi Kizzy: For each of the next five rows (Row 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6), you repeat the entire Row 1 (*K2, P2* across). I hope this clears things up.

  12. Hi Marie, could you explain Row 13-48. I'm not quite getting it. The same with Row 49-54. Thanks.

  13. Hi Kizzy:

For Rows 13-48, you will repeat Rows 1-12 three times. For example:
    Row 13 - Repeat Row 1
    Row 14 - Repeat Row 2
    Row 15 - Repeat Row 3
    Row 16 - Repeat Row 4
and so on until you are at Row 48.

    For Row 49 - Repeat Row 1
    Row 50 - Repeat Row 2
    Row 51 - Repeat Row 3
and so on until you reach Row 54.

Here are two suggestions for keeping track of your rows for a pattern like this. You could use a row counter. Or, what I do is I write down the row numbers on the pattern and then I cross off each row as I finish it. I hope this clears things up.

  15. I'm confused .. for the gussett, do I pick up the 11 slip stitches from the heel flap or from the heel turn? This is my first sock so I would appreciate any help....thanks.

  16. Hi Barb: Michelle says, "You will pick up your stitches from the heel flap. They will then join the stitches from the heel turn to create the gussett." I hope this helps!
