Creating Yarmulkes with Parisian Cotton

During spring, Parisian Cotton is often used to make yarmulkes or kippot.  According to Keep Me in Stitches, a Galler Yarns retailer in Long Island, NY, each cone can be used to make about 30 yarmulkes.

There are many great resources online for yarmulke patterns, so we thought we'd share some of our favorites.

• Eastside Fiber Arts includes links to many free crochet and knit kippot patterns. 
• Kippa Designs shares a basic formula for a crocheted "kippa base" and includes links to graphs for color work on the edges.
• Jennifer Tocker from Ms. Yarnaholic's School for Wayward Skeins has a free knit yarmulke pattern in reverse stockinette stitch.  You can also find design and construction ideas in her  "Kippalong" posts from 2005.
• Ravelry members can also search the pattern database for yarmulke or kippah patterns. 

This week we're sharing our free pattern, the Pinwheel Yarmulke by Marie Segares, early in case you want to crochet some before Passover.

This pattern uses a combination of Tunisian crochet and crochet stitches.

Materials

• Galler Yarns Parisian Cotton, colorway Lazulite 5144 (Main Color) (10 oz/285 g/1090 yds/997 m) – approximately 27 yds/25 m
• Galler Yarns Parisian Cotton, colorway Dark Grey 4187 (Color B) (10 oz/285 g/1090 yds/997 m) – approximately 27 yds/25 m
• US 00 steel crochet hook or US E-4/3.5 mm crochet hook or any size needed to obtain gauge
• Stitch marker or small amount of scrap yarn
• Yarn needle

Gauge 
Diameter of finished yarmulke = 5” (13 cm). Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Special Sts

• Return = Do not turn.  Ch 1.  *Yo, draw through two loops.*  Repeat from * to * until there is only one chain on hook.
• Tss = Tunisian simple stitch = Insert hook next vertical bar.  Yo and draw up a loop.  (Stitch Diva has a great photo tutorial and Kim Guzman has a wonderful video tutorial if you need more information about this stitch.)

Pattern Note

For Pinwheel (Tunisian crochet section), always skip first vertical bar of each row.

With MC, ch 12.


Row 1: Skip first ch.  Insert hook in next st, yo, and draw up a loop.  Return.


Row 2: Tss in next st.  Insert hook in next st, yo, and draw up a loop.  Return.


Row 3: Tss in ea of next two sts.  Insert hook in next st, yo, and draw up a loop.  Return.


Row 4:  Tss in ea of next three sts.  Insert hook in next st, yo, and draw up a loop.  Return.


Row 5: Tss in ea of next four sts.  Insert hook in next st, yo, and draw up a loop.  Return.


Row 6: Tss in ea of next five sts.  Insert hook in next st, yo, and draw up a loop.  Return.


Row 7: Tss in ea of next six sts.  Insert hook in next st, yo, and draw up a loop.  Return.


Row 8: Tss in ea of next seven sts.  Insert hook in next st, yo, and draw up a loop.  Return.

Rows 34 - 55: Repeat Rows 12-33 once.


Rows 56 - 65: Repeat Rows 12-21 once.


Row 66: Tss in ea of next ten sts and in st with marker.  Return.


Row 67: *Insert hook in next st as for Tss.  Yo, draw through two loops.*  Repeat from * to * across row.   


Fasten off with long tail.  Remove stitch marker.  With yarn needle, seem pinwheel together on wrong side using a whipstitch.  (60 sts around outer edge)


Border (crochet section)
Rnd 1: With CB, join with sl st in blo of any st.  Ch 1.  Sc in blo of same st and ea of next four sts.  2 sc in next st.  *Sc in blo of ea of next five sts.  2 sc in blo of next st.*  Repeat from * to * around.  Change to MC while joining with sl st to blo of first st.  (70 sts)


Rnd 2: Ch 1.  Sc in blo of same st and ea of next five sts.  2 sc in next st.  *Sc in blo of ea of next six sts.  2 sc in blo of next st.*  Repeat from * to * around.  Join with sl st to blo of first sc.  (80 sts)


Rnd 3: Ch 1.  Sc in blo of same st and ea of next six sts.  2 sc in next st.  *Sc in blo of ea of next seven sts.  2 sc in blo of next st.*  Repeat from * to * around.  Change to CB while joining with sl st to blo of first st.  (90 sts)


Rnd 4: Ch 1.  2 sc in blo of same st.  Sc in blo of ea of next seven sts.  *2 sc in blo of next st.  Sc in blo of ea of next eight sts.*  Repeat from * to * around.  Join with sl st to blo of first sc.  (100 sts)


Rnd 5: Ch 1.  Sc in blo of same st and ea st around.  Change to MC while joining with sl st to blo of first st.  


Rnd 6: Ch 1.  2 sc in blo of same st.  Sc in blo of ea of next eight sts.  *2 sc in blo of next st.  Sc in blo of ea of next nine sts.*  Repeat from * to * around.  Join with sl st to blo of first sc.  (110 sts)


Rnd 7: Ch 1.  Sc in blo of same st and ea of next nine sts.  2 sc in blo of next st.  *Sc in blo of ea of next 10 sts.  2 sc in blo of next st.*  Repeat from * to * around.  Change to CB while joining with sl st to blo of first st.  


Rnd 8: Ch 1.  Sc in blo of same st and ea st around.  Join with sl st to blo of first sc.


Rnd 9: Repeat Rnd 8 once.  Optional: Repeat Rnd 9 two to five more times to increase finished size and curve.


Fasten off.  With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails on the wrong side.


Blocking
Completely soak yarmulke.  Shape over bowl and dry.
