I Love Yarn Day Alpaca Yarn Tasting Giveaway!

We're celebrating our alpaca yarns for I Love Yarn Day 2012.

Prime Alpaca in Black

What is alpaca yarn anyway?
Alpaca yarns come from the fleeces of alpacas, friendly animals from the camelid family.  Even undyed, alpaca yarn has a broad range of colors (more than 20!).  It is incredibly warm and exceptionally soft.  Alpaca yarn is also absorbent, strong, lightweight, and highly elastic.

What's so special about Galler Yarns alpaca yarns?
Our alpacas live in the Andes Mountains at altitudes of 10,000 to 14,000 feet above sea level.  Raised at high altitudes in freezing cold temperatures (as low as 5 degrees Farenheit), these alpacas have softer hair with more thermal capacity than their lowland cousins.   We use baby alpaca fiber, which has a low micron count, and is softer than other classifications of alpaca, in our yarns.  Our alpacas are the cashmere of alpacas - superfine, incredibly soft, and highly wearable!  Naturally hypoallergenic, free of lanolin or dander, and water and fire resistant, these fibers are a pleasure to wear against the skin.

We work very closely with our mills in Peru, which provide jobs that directly benefit more than one thousand families in the area.  The mills work with the alpacas from start to finish - from raising alpacas in the high Andean zones of Peru, to spinning the yarn, to creating handcrafted and semi-industrial garments - all while preserving a living culture thousands of years old.

Heather Prime Alpaca colors are dyed and gorgeously blended into a rainbow of shades.  Heather Prime Alpaca is a sport weight yarn with 16 wraps per inch, available in 1/2 pound skeins with 600 yards per skein.

Terwilliger Versatile by Rilana Riley-Munson and Twisted by The Cranky Knitter, free knitting patterns in Heather Prime Alpaca.

Peruvian Tweed colors are made with three strands of undyed, natural alpaca twisted together to create a yarn that is lofty, plush, and deliciously textured.  Peruvian Tweed is a worsted weight yarn with 9 wraps per inch, available in 1/2 pound skeins with 595 yards per skein.

The Luxurious Alpaca Stole, a free knitting pattern from Crazy for Ewe.

  10. I have used Prime Alpaca for three projects I've knit and I love it. It is soft and warm and, as mentioned, feels great against the skin. It is also very easy to work with and its softness makes the fingers sing.

I've received e-mails from you for awhile, yet haven't used your product as of yet. There are no retail stores in my area that stocks your lovely yarns. I'm fairly new to the knitting world and have to say "I'm hooked!!" Many thanks for the opportunity to enter for a chance to feel your yarns.
Also, I'm headed to FB and ravelry to like your post.

  33. I found out about Galler yarns when I read a pattern that used them. I tried to find a local merchant who carries Galler yarns. I reached out to you and you were really prompt in getting back to me saying you don't have a local dealer therefore you would be happy to assist me directly. So now, not only do I want to try your yarns (which look and sound soooo yummy) but I want to support a company that provides such great customer service!
